In the list of supported LateX commands in MathJax online documentation, I see \\ and \newline for creating newline but the following does not work. I may be missing something?

\[a^2+2a+1\newline a^2+1\]
\(a^2+2a+1\newline a^2+1\)
or
\[a^2+2a+1\\a^2+1\]
\(a^2+2a+1\\a^2+1\)

Thanks..Saf

Hi,

Just as in regular LaTeX, these linebreaks will have no effect in standard math mode. You have to use a multiline environment such as gather*, align* etc.

Regards,
Peter.

Actually, the second form (with \\) SHOULD work (MathJax allows this even though TeX doesn't).  If that doesn't work for you, can you provide an example page where it doesn't work?  Or at least say more about the environment you are working in (for example, if you are using a page-description language like markdown, that can interfere with the TeX code).
