I am looking for a way to systematically handle units for a science/engineering website.  In my application I have a large number of contributors and I don't want to leave the way units are displayed to the discretion of each author.

When I'm working in print with LaTeX I use the siunitx package, but others like units or unitdef are good too.

Is it possible to extend MathJax so that it works with LaTeX packages like siunitx? If not, any suggestions on how to proceed?  Is this type of thing in the MathJax roadmap?

Thanks!

Hi Dan,

This is not currently on our roadmap but we'd be thrilled to help anyone who wants to write a MathJax extension implementing these.

I've never used these packages, so it's hard to say how hard this task would be. From a quick glance, there's nothing problematic I could find (e.g. nothing graphical). siunitx looks like a huge package so maybe not the best place to begin. I couldn't quite figure out the unitsdef package, it seemed focused on text-mode, which would probably be irrelevant in a MathJax setting. The units package seems pretty small and probably the best place to start.

Peter.

Ok - that's great.

I'll take a look at the units package (I'm less familiar with it) and see how it overlaps with what we are looking for.  Thanks!

Dan

Fred has written a tutorial on writing a MathJax extension https://github.com/mathjax/MathJax-docs/wiki/Tutorial-Extension-Authoring. Be sure to check it out.
