Many years ago, the main/lead developer of Mathics was hired by the company that makes Mathematica, and this effectively killed Mathics. See some of the links and discussion at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5196638
I've seen this pattern many times with mathematics software (e.g., SageMath, which I started) and industry employment, where people worked on Sage a ton but when they left academia for industry they stopped. In fact, this has even happened to me (!), at least for now...
