Latest version is still 1.0 from 2016, is that correct? No new versions since?

Many years ago, the main/lead developer of Mathics was hired by the company that makes Mathematica, and this effectively killed Mathics.  See some of the links and discussion at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5196638

I've seen this pattern many times with mathematics software (e.g., SageMath, which I started) and industry employment, where people worked on Sage a ton but when they left academia for industry they stopped.   In fact, this has even happened to me (!), at least for now...

Hi,

I'm happy to be completely wrong about my previous email.  There's been some Mathics activity on Github during the last year:

and issues being at least created/updated

and tons of development did happen after the founder left to Wolfram Inc.:

including numerous pull requests merged in 2019 at least: https://github.com/mathics/Mathics/pulls?q=is%3Apr+is%3Aclosed

In any case, check out Github, where Mathics is evidently very much alive past 2016, despite an absence of formal releases.

Jan Pöschko started the project but most of the work was done by Angus
Griffith after he left the project. See
https://github.com/mathics/Mathics/graphs/contributors.

It looks like in the past few years there has been less activity but
based on the commits wouldn't say the project is dead.
