After getting a test object scanned I saved it out in each of the formats to see which worked best.  I tried loading all of the formats that I could into LightWave 3D, 3D-Coat, and 3ds max. I was not able to get any of them to load the object with textures. I wonder if anyone else has had any luck or what Matherix uses for this.

Meshlab opens the textured models from 3Dify in PLY, OBJ and VRML formats.

This is because the color information is not encoded in a texture map.
Instead it is encode as 'color by vertex'.
I.e. each vertex has an extra attribute - color.
There is no UV mapping coordinate system and no separate map
containing the pixel colors.

I suggest ply format is one of the easiest to read with 'color by
vertex' info as this was one of its original concepts and so is likely
to be implemented in most ply readers.

as usual YMMV.

I know it's in the Vertex Color, that's what makes it strange that these programs aren't loading it.  They all support vertex coloring.

When I try importing the PLY to LightWave I get this error:

Can you send me the PLY file? This might be a bug...

Thanks,
Chytu.

Phil,

I could open the file you have sent in Meshlab. Here's a screenshot. I have just downloaded LightWave 3D trial version to check if I can open it there. We will provide a fix as soon as we discover the bug.

Thanks,
Chytu.

Wow it doesn't look anywhere near that nice when I open in Meshlab. Mine has black triangles all over it. I'm sorry it turns out the PLY problem is not a bug, I was using an STL importer for the PLY file.

If you want to try loading an STL file ( I exported from mine MeshLab) you can download the LightWave importer script from here: http://www.chromecow.com/
To run the script open LightWave Modeler and go the the Utilities tab across the top, then along the left side click LScript and load the SHM_STL_Importer_v1.12.ls file from the download.  There might be a polygon count limitation on the LW trial version though, I'm not sure.

the problem is moving the color to the vertex so that apps will read this , what i usually do is convert color/texture to vertex in Geomagic then save as a binary stl , open in zbrush under the zplugin stl import with the solidview option on
