The Centre for the Humanities Engaging Science and Society (CHESS) in the Philosophy Department at Durham University UK is seeking applicants for funded PhD Studentships in Transformative Humanities and Global Challenges.
Each studentship will offer a tuition fee waiver, a stipend for 3.5 years (full time) or 7 years (part time) at the level set by UKRI, additional funding opportunities, and access to training and placement resources. The global challenges scheme provides an extra 5000 gbp of research funding. These schemes will support outstanding candidates beginning a PhD programme in October 2026 on projects related to the themes of our Transformative Humanities framework and Global Challenges Framework. Successful applicants will become members of the CHESS research group and be based in the Philosophy Department.
CHESS is particularly interested in supporting applicants studying history or philosophy of science that has interdisciplinary links. We encourage projects that align with our academic faculty’s expertise, including in areas like:
· Philosophy of Science and the Environment
· Philosophy of Hazard, Risk, or Resilience
· Science and Society
· Philosophy of Medicine
· Philosophy and the Social Sciences
· AI Epistemology and AI Ethics
· History of Science
· History of Medicine
