Call for Papers - Transforming Equity in STEM Education: Disciplinary Challenges and Global Perspectives

Guest Editors:

  • Lihua Xu, Associate Professor, Deakin University, Australia
  • Sonya Martin, Professor, Seoul National University, Republic of Korea
  • Ulrika Ryan, Associate Professor, Malmö University, Sweden
  • Yasmine Abtahi, Professor, University of South-Eastern Norway, Norway

This collection seeks to bring together researchers working at the intersections of equity, identity, and STEM education, spanning across both disciplinary (e.g. science, mathematics) and integrated approaches to STEM. The goal is not simply to revisit known challenges, but to critically examine where and how progress is being made, and to surface new directions for research, practice, and policy. We invite contributions that examine these issues through empirical, theoretical, or methodological lenses, and especially those that highlight underrepresented perspectives, regions, and populations.

Submission Guidelines

1. Researchers interested in contributing to this topical collection are invited to submit an extended abstract (up to 1,500 words) that includes the following:

  • A brief theoretical background and rationale for the study
  • Clear articulation of the research goals and methodology
  • A summary of key findings or expected contributions

Please send extended abstracts to A/Prof. Lihua Xu at: lihu...@deakin.edu.au. The guest editors will review all abstracts for alignment with the aims and scope of the topical collection. Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be invited to submit full manuscripts for peer review.

2. All full papers should be prepared in accordance with the journal’s author guidelines and submitted via the IJSME online submission system. Please note that IJSME strictly adheres to the word count policy, where each manuscript, excluding the title, abstract, keywords, and references, cannot exceed 7,500 words. Please clearly indicate in the cover letter that the submission is intended for the “Transforming Equity in STEM Education: Disciplinary Challenges and Global Perspectives” topical collection.

3. Submission Timeline:

  • Abstract submissions open: August 1, 2025
  • Final deadline for manuscript submissions: December 31, 2026
