Greetings! I am writing to share information about an MAA OPEN Math virtual workshop that might be of interest to you or your colleagues who teach proof-intensive courses.
In our workshop, Supporting Collaboration in Your Proof-Based Courses, we share how to take important theorems and develop tasks around them that support students’ collaborative participation in meaningful mathematical activity. A major focus of the workshop is designing activities so that every student has access and ownership in their group’s work.
We will focus our time on joint planning where you will work with other instructors to develop group-worthy proof tasks for a proof-based undergraduate course you teach. We will provide support around instructional moves that can lead to success in implementing these tasks. Over the course of the workshop, we will reflect on our teaching practices, the challenges of implementing group work, and practical strategies for designing and implementing tasks. You will leave this workshop equipped with three group tasks developed for your course and a set of instructional moves to support successful implementation of these tasks and any other group work you do.
This virtual workshop will take place from Monday May 19 to Thursday May 22, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM Eastern. The workshop team consists of me and my colleagues Kate Melhuish, Sharon Strickland, Bea Ellis, Christine Austin, and Carlos Acevedo.
You can learn more about our workshop and register at https://web.cvent.com/event/49c472f4-a6ad-4602-abf2-6a84224ecdd6/summary.
The registration deadline for our workshop is Thursday, May 1.
We hope you will consider joining us and also help us get the word out to colleagues who might like to try using small-group work in proof-intensive courses. We look forward to seeing you!
Sincerely,
Cody Patterson
