Call for Special Issues Proposals

Esteemed researchers, we invite you to propose a special issue proposal for the upcoming issues of Learning: Research and Practice. We have recently (March 2024) enhanced our Aims and Scope to more deeply highlight that we are an international journal of education that recognizes the complexities of interactions between different approaches to understanding the phenomena of learning. We aim to highlight novel perspectives on how learning occurs, the relationships between knowledge, learners, their peers, educators, and tools, and how these processes can be supported or even enhanced, as well as its normative prescription. We are open to inquiries about learning in its various sites, in contexts in and out of schools and other institutions, and across the entire life span when it happens. Additionally, work that foregrounds the relationship between learning and technology is a priority for this journal.

Special issues should address an emerging topic or problem of practice related to our aims and scope that will generate new knowledge for the field of education. It should also encourage international submissions. A minimum of 8 research articles should be met, otherwise it will be a focus issue, with other regular articles. There should be at least two Guest Editors and the Guest Editorial team should be as geographically dispersed as possible to ensure maximum possible dissemination and recognition within the research community. The Guest Editorial team is also responsible for the review process such as looking for reviewers and ensuring at least two peer reviewers in accordance with the journal’s double-blind peer review policy.

Our publisher Taylor & Francis will provide free access to all Special Issues for a limited time. This will help in the promotion of the articles in the issue. Also, Learning: Research and Practice will help to co-organize a webinar for the Special Issue to enhance the visibility and overall impact of the issue.

Submission Instructions

Please email special issue proposals to learning...@nie.edu.sg with the following details:

  1. Special issue title
  2. Guest Editors’ details (Name, designation, affiliation, address, email address, short bibliography (1 paragraph))
  3. Synopsis of the issue (including the proposed aims and scope of the proposed special issue, an overview of the intended focus and a list of the topics to be covered)
  4. Rationale of the issue
  5. List of proposed authors (with affiliations), titles, and if possible, short abstracts
  6. A preliminary time schedule for the preparation of the special issue. Please note that a special issue publication typically requires a 1.5-year lead time from call to reviews and final production.

Do refer to previous special issue calls for examples.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Editors. The following criteria will be used in the review:

  • Suitability of the topic for the journal
  • Overall quality of the proposal: originality and contribution to the field
  • Completeness of the proposal
  • Guest Editor(s)’ experience in editorial work

If the proposal is approved, a Call-for-Papers for the Special Issue will be issued and posted online. Learning: Research and Practice plans to have a special issue once a year.
