Dear Colleagues,
The Association for Women in Mathematics Education Committee facilitated the panel “How to Hire a Math Educator: Considerations for Mathematics Departments” at the 2024 MathFest. How to Hire a Math Educator_MathFes2024.pdf
The discussions and contributions at the panel have highlighted that transparency in the hiring process of math educators could greatly benefit both candidates and departments. Our goal is to develop a set of guidelines for candidates and hiring committees that will enhance the potential for excellence in mathematics education within an institution.
To that end, we are seeking stories from you and your colleagues about the hiring process of math educators in your department. These stories could include best practices, guidelines, and protocols you have in place, as well as anonymized personal testimonials or experiences from members of the department during the hiring process or in their early career stages. We also welcome any other perspectives you believe could be valuable. We believe your contribution will help us support mathematics departments in enhancing administrators’ ability to effectively support mathematics education personnel.
Your name and institution will be kept confidential and will not be associated with the set of guidelines. In addition to the guidelines, we plan to publish a brief article in the Notices of the AMS that highlights key insights from the stories shared.
Gathering anonymized stories for our purposes does not require IRB review, as they can be treated as oral histories (see the section under “Oral History” at CUNY Human Subjects Hand Book).
If you have any questions, please reach out to Dante Tawfeeq (dtaw...@jjay.cuny.edu) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice or Vilma Mesa (vm...@umich.edu) at the University of Michigan.
