What is ICME-16?

The International Congress on Mathematical Education is the largest international conference on mathematics education in the world. This quadrennial event is organised under the auspices of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction and explores current global trends in mathematics education research and mathematics teaching practices at all levels.

ICME-16 is set to take place in the heart of Europe—Prague, Czech Republic on July 9-16, 2028. Our venue, O2 Universum, is ready to welcome thousands of participants, and we are aiming for an incredible turnout!

The preparations for this prestigious congress are well underway. First and foremost, during the ICMI EC meeting on July 5, 2024, ICMI established the International Programme Committee, bringing together professionals from around the world. Their first onsite meeting is scheduled for September 15–19, 2025, in Prague. This early start gives us plenty of time to shape a rich and dynamic program, ensuring that all invited speakers and presenters are confirmed well in advance.

A special highlight of ICME-16 will be the Regional Focus programme which will depict shared history and wealth of insights of Central and Eastern European Countries involved in the organisation of the Congress. A dedicated group of ambassadors from 12 countries has come together to explore the theme: Mathematics communities, curriculum, and teaching in the 1970s/80s, the 1990s, and today. Researchers across the region have already begun collaborating on various aspects of this important topic.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the ICMI Executive Committee for entrusting us with the organization of such a prestigious event. ICME-16 is not only a fantastic opportunity for global collaboration but also a chance to highlight the contributions of our region to the field of mathematics education research.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Prague in 2028—let’s make ICME-16 an unforgettable experience! Check the video of our presentation during ICME-15 in Sydney(starting in 40:20).

We would like to warmly thank all the researchers from the Central and East European countries who participated in the preparation of the bid for ICME 2028! They will continue to work for the Congress either as part of the core LOC members or as part of the Organising Committee for the Regional Focus programme. They will also serve as ambassadors for ICME16 in their countries (spreading the information about ICME-16 in universities and schools, helping researchers and teachers find the financial means to participate) and organise satellite events in which they will promote the congress.

INFORMATION FOR TSG LEADERS

Invitations to join the TSG teams will be sent out in Autumn 2025 and January 2026 to researchers around the world. The teams were proposed by the IPC during its September 2025 meeting. As is customary for ICME, some current team members will continue, while others will make space for new colleagues. This rotation helps ensure that ICME includes a broad range of voices, encourages global participation, and brings fresh perspectives into each TSG.

Once the first round of invited researchers responds (either accepting or declining), additional invitations will be issued as needed to complete each team.

Here is a list of TSGs with their teams (it will updated regularly).
Important dates
  • Information about the composition of the team will be sent by the Convenor Naďa Vondrová in February 2026 (or earlier if the team is complete).
  • Draft Discussion papers should be submitted for the IPC to consider to the LOC Co-chair David Janda by the end of August 2026 (it is advised that the TSG teams refer to the discussion paper of the TSG, if it existed, in the last ICME).
  • Final version of the Discussion papers should be submitted to the LOC Co-chair David Janda by the end of October 2026.
  • The dates for participants' submissions will be announced in the first announcement in October 2026 (the registration for the congress will be open in June 2027).

Guidelines for TSG teams
After their second meeting in January 2027, the IPC will provide TSG teams with guidelines of how they can manage submissions and work before, during and after the congress.
