We are pleased to welcome you to the 32nd International Mathematical Views Conference, MAVI, which will be held at the University of Bristol, UK, from 23rd-25th September 2026.
There are two main aims of the conference. The first aim is to share research on affect-related topics in mathematics education, including attitudes, beliefs, emotions, identity, interests, meaning, motivation, values, well-being, and related areas.
You may share theoretical and/or empirical research, and we welcome contributions on learning, teaching, or the application of mathematics at any educational level or in the workplace. The second aim of the conference is to engage in extensive academic discussions on the topics presented.
Thus, it is at the heart of the MAVI spirit that there will be ample time for these in-depth discussions.
Plenary speaker: John Mason
My interest is in the lived experience of teaching and learning mathematics. My enquiry draws upon a six-fold intertwined structure of the human psyche, in which the vast lexicon of feelings forms just part of the affective domain. To retain my focus on experience, I ask about different energy states involved in initiating pedagogical actions, and how these interact with the different energy states of learners as they engage with (or not) and sustain (or not) useful activity.
However, since learning takes place over time, while teaching takes place in time (as initiated pedagogical actions), I resist here the use of ‘learning’. I follow Gattegno (ref) in seeing learning as mostly taking place during sleep, so I confine myself to trying to describe and articulate relevant energies involved in teaching and in being taught. I call upon (my interpretation of) ancient psychology of the Vedas and the Upanishads to propose a tripartite view of energies, which might provide access to shifts in energy experienced while teaching and while being taught.
I invite you therefor to join me in an enquiry into a discourse based on energy, focussing on the interplay between energies associated with and experienced when teaching, and associated with and experienced when being taught. My aim is to increase sensitivity to personal experience, not provide categories for analysing the experiences of others.
All submitted papers should explicitly address affect-related topics in mathematics education [attitudes, beliefs, emotions, identity, interest, meaning, motivation, values, etc.]
Papers should be submitted on or before 12th June 2026. (If a short extension is needed, please email tracy.h...@bristol.ac.uk)
Papers will be submitted here: https://journals.helsinki.fi/lumatb.The filename must begin with MAVI32. By submitting a paper to the conference, you agree to review two papers submitted by other authors. The review period will take place between 14th June 2026 and 10th July 2026.
For your paper, please use the MAVI template. Word limit for papers is 4000 words (excluding references).
