Title: How does the design of textbook influence the ways in which teachers plan? a study of the interaction of teachers and textbooks
Abstract: This study presents the findings of a comparative analysis of the planning sessions of six high school mathematics teachers as they independently planned four lessons, each with a different set of textbook materials. To learn how their curricular practice might be related to the design of textbooks, four textbooks were selected that represent a range: from student centered to teacher centered. The planned lessons were analyzed for how the content unfolded across the lessons (I.e., their mathematical stories). We found that even when given textbooks with very different design principles and intentions, teachers designed lessons that were consistent in their focus and structure. However, teachers’ instructional orientations influenced the ways in which they interacted with the curriculum materials. This implies that enabling teachers to teach student-centered lessons in mathematics may require teachers to develop new interaction patterns with textbook materials.
Looking forward to seeing you, and please share the invite with others who might have a particular interest in the topic.
Sincerely,
