Dear All,
As I may have told many of you during the MTA conference, we are holding a conference on Language and Mathematics Education at SRMAP in November this year. I am attaching the conference flyer here. The website is still under construction and will be ready by early next week.

Jam has been part of the planning of this conference right from the beginning and we had also shared our thoughts with Ravi.  Given that there is very little work on language and mathematics education from India, (and also that most of the participants will be from India as we are not able to provide travel support for international participants),  we plan to organise this conference slightly differently:
  1. As in any conference, we will accept papers/posters based on empirical research and  that makes a theoretical intervention.
  2. But we also would like participants to participate by reading up relevant literature on one of the themes and submit a summary with reflections on the relevance of concerns expressed for the Indian context .  These summaries would contribute  to the panel discussions and poster presentations.  More on this on the website.
The main reason  behind accepting summaries is because we see this conference as an opportunity to learn. The idea is to ensure that most of the participants have engaged with at least some of the issues in language and mathematics education and are better prepared to incorporate the language question as part of their research or initiate new work.

Minati was part of the initial discussions but has been too occupied later to continue with it. Rama Kant read through the concept note carefully and has suggested significant additions and we are reworking the concept note which will be shared on the website.

I am not able to immediately locate the mailing list of the mathematics education community of India. If one of you has it readily, could you please share it with me?

More later,
regards,
Jayasree
