We have an opportunity for a domestic or international PhD candidate to join us in the Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education (ILSTE) at Australian Catholic University (ACU). The candidate will have a key role in the ARC Discovery Project ‘Enabling Students' Critical Mathematical Thinking’ (DP220101015), led by Professor Vince Geiger. This project is focused on the development of teaching capabilities that support students use of mathematics to solve real world problems associated with social and environmental issues. It is being implemented in Years 6-10 mathematics classes.
Research excellence at ACU is founded on the principles of social justice and attracts leading experts, students and collaborators from across the globe. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, ACU is ranked in the top 100 Young Universities worldwide. In the most recent Excellence in Research for Australia assessment, research at ACU was ranked above or well-above world-average for 10 fields of research in Australia.
The PhD candidate will be situated in ILSTE at ACU. Established in 2014, the Institute has driven ACU’s research excellence in the priority area of Education, contributing to ACU’s current standing as second in Australia and 32nd in the world for education (Shanghai Ranking, 2023).
The PhD stipend scholarship is available for a high-performing candidate who has a particular interest in:
• the role of student-student and student-teacher interaction when using mathematics to solve real world problems that are concerned with social and environmental issues
• the design and implementation of mathematics tasks concerned with social and environmental issues.
The successful applicant will be awarded:
• An ACU PhD Scholarship of $33,511 per annum (indexed annually) for up to 3.5 years, subject to full-time study mode and satisfactory progress,
• An ACU Tuition Fee Scholarship valued at c. $30,000 per annum for up to 3.5 years, subject to full-time study mode and satisfactory progress, and
• A single Overseas Student Health Care Policy and a Relocation Allowance (up to $2,000) for international candidates.
