to Mathematics Education Researchers (MER) community
Mathematical research and its dissemination require a deep analysis of the meaning behind both thinking and practicing mathematics, with epistemological and methodological implications.
Mathematics education specifically focuses on these aspects. In this issue, the Italian Association of Research in Mathematics Education (AIRDM) aims to present a collection of emerging research topics in this direction.
We provide a broad, though not exhaustive, overview of research in mathematics education, mainly conducted by recent PhD graduates. The articles cover a variety of themes that have recently gained interest, including transversal aspects such as argumentation and proof; domain-specific aspects, such as the ability to identify invariant relations between mathematical objects; epistemological reflections on the nature of mathematics and its learning, including considerations on mathematical learning processes; methodological issues, such as informal mathematics education and mathematics teacher professional development.
