JRME Special Issue Call
“Strengths Based Research at the Intersection of Mathematics and Disability”
Special Issue Editors: Rachel Lambert and Jessica Hunt
Neurodivergent, Deaf and/or students with disabilities are mathematicians who bring vital, brilliant experiences and perspectives into our mathematics classrooms and communities. Yet little is known regarding how these students engage, experience, andthink within mathematics. For example, we need more research examining how student-
centered learning environments work to promote these students’ participation, thinking,
and learning of mathematics. Additionally, despite decades of NCTM Standards-based
reform, research regarding if and how inquiry-based classrooms can support mathematics outcomes beyond traditional notions of achievement or performance for these students remains underdeveloped. Mathematics education would benefit from studies employing novel and innovative methodologies that capture the complexity of disability and mathematics through observable aspects of student participation and interactions in mathematics in real time.
In this special issue of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME), we call for an unapologetically strengths-based approach to research and scholarship at the intersection of mathematics and disability. We seek research that examines and critiques taken-for-granted notions about neurodivergence, disability, and mathematics learning in classroom environments and beyond. Of particular interest are studies that (1) draw on perspectives from theories and frameworks not often employed in considerations of the experiences of neurodivergent students and/or students with disabilities or (2) connect methodological approaches to the unanswered questions around disability and mathematics education.
