Mathematics Education Researchers (MER) community
The Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies in Vaasaoffers three (3) funded positions for doctoral researchers (max. 48 months/position). The faculty covers research and education in the fields of education, health sciences and social sciences and the funded positions are available within the following doctoral programmes:
- The Doctoral Programme in Education (main subjects: Education (General), Education (Teacher Oriented), Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Adult Education, Home Economics, Sloyd Science
- The Doctoral Programme in Health Sciences (main subject: Caring Science)
- The Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences (main subjects: Social Policy, Developmental Psychology)
The faculty encourages new doctoral researchers to apply for the funded doctoral positions.
The employment starts on September 1, 2025 or as per agreed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
This announcement is open for those who have a Master's Degree AND a supervisor or a potential supervisor from Åbo Akademi University (who has agreed to supervise the applicant) within any of the subjects represented at the Faculty of Education and Welfare Studies.
Applicants must have received their Master's degree (or equivalent) by June 30, 2025, at the latest (a copy of degree certificate or a certificate of completed degree achieved after the application period has closed should be sent to graduat...@abo.fi).
An applicant, who is not yet admitted for doctoral studies at the faculty, needs to fulfil the requirements for doctoral studies according to the principles for admission to the doctoral programmes within the faculty. Please note that there is a separate application process for the admission to a doctoral programme at ÅAU. The admission process for a study right can be initiated after receiving an offer of funding. The doctoral researcher needs to be enrolled in the doctoral programme when the employment starts.
The applicants are assessed based on their research plan (weight 50 %), and previous study achievements (weight 50 %), including possible results of previous research in the relevant field or related subjects. Previously received funding for doctoral studies will be considered when determining the final length of the employment (the received funding can amount to a total maximum of 48 months).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Doctoral researchers employed by Åbo Akademi University should actively take part in the research and education within the faculty, in Vaasa.
Åbo Akademi University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary for a doctoral position will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff in the salary system. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral researchers is approximately 2580 € per month. The salary increases as the candidate makes progress towards a doctoral degree and the finalization of the studies.
Doctoral researchers will have total working time, which means 1,612 hours per academic year. The employment is fulltime. The individual study plan for doctoral researchers will be evaluated annually.
A trial period applies to new employees.

- Doctoral researchers already registered at ÅAU: Account of all previous funding (salary, working grants) received for the doctoral studies (funding organization + time period + sum received), and other funding that has been applied for (in addition to this application).
