Faculty, department and research environment
The Faculty of Learning and Society offers professional education for schools, culture, leisure and sports. The faculty runs one of Sweden's largest teacher education programmes where students choose one of four degrees: preschool teacher, primary school teacher, subject teacher or vocational teacher. In addition to education for sports scientists, historians, teachers, special educators, special teachers and study and career counselors, there are master's and doctoral programmes, as well as independent courses, further education and commissioned education. The faculty is characterised by innovative thinking when it comes to the design of the programmes and collaborations with schools, municipalities, organisations and the business community. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with the surrounding community. We are located in the Orkanen and Scylla buildings, at Hjälmarekajen next to Malmö Central Station.
The Department of Science, Mathematics and Society (NMS) is a broad multidisciplinary environment with connections to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subject areas. NMS has approximately 50 employees and conducts teaching, research and collaboration. Research at NMS focuses on issues of education and learning in science, sustainability and mathematics in preschool, school, adult education and teacher education.
Didactics of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, NMDI
Research in Science and Mathematics Education (NMDI) aims to develop knowledge about teaching, learning, subject content, democratic issues and identity formation in relation to science and mathematics. This includes educational practices in preschool, school, adult education and teacher education, both in formal and non-formal contexts.
The subject investigates the relationship between specific subject content and how it is communicated in different environments, as well as how individuals and groups develop and use knowledge in these environments. Furthermore, the research includes studies of teaching processes and how participants develop different approaches to science and mathematics.
At Malmö University, the postgraduate subject NMDI is linked to the research environment SISEME – Studies in Science, Environmental and Mathematics Education, which primarily applies didactic, societal and linguistic perspectives on learning and education in the aforementioned subject areas.
We are looking for a PhD student in science education. Applications related to interdisciplinary issues in education linked to STEM are welcome, but science/technology needs to be in the foreground.
See the graduate school's websites, both the joint one at the host university, Linköping University, and the local one at Malmö University, for information about the graduate school's priority areas both nationally and locally.
