FWD message:

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the SIGMAA on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) executive committee, we are pleased to announce that the SIGMAA on RUME will run TWO special sessions at the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Washington, D.C: a general RUME session and a special session on Research on the Teaching and Learning of Proof in Undergraduate Mathematics. We encourage RUME researchers to submit an abstract to present their work in these special sessions. Abstracts are due on Tuesday, September 9 at 11:59 PM, EDT. The maximum abstract length is 2000 characters. Please see the details below.

Dates: The conference is January 4-7, 2026.

Abstract Submission Form:  https://meetings.ams.org/math/jmm2026/cfp.cgi To submit to the Special Session on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Educationclick on the "Begin a Submission" button under the MAA. To submit to the AMS Special Session on Research on the Teaching and Learning of Proof in Undergraduate Mathematics, click on the "Begin a Submission" button under the AMS.

First Session Title: (MAASS3A) SIGMAA Special Session on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education, I

First Session Description: The goals of this session are to promote quality research in undergraduate mathematics education, disseminate educational studies to the mathematics community, and facilitate the impact of research findings on undergraduate mathematics. Presentations may be based on research in any postsecondary mathematical area. Examples include studies on students' reasoning or mathematical practices, instructional practices, curriculum design, and professional development.

Second Session Title: (SS100A) AMS Special Session on Research on the Teaching and Learning of Proof in Undergraduate Mathematics, I

Second Session Description: The session features research on the teaching and learning of proof in undergraduate mathematics. Examples include studies on students’ engagement in proof activities (e.g., validating and interpreting proofs, creating conjectures, using logic and deduction), students’ roles in collaborative proof writing, students’ attitudes toward proof, and instructional approaches to engaging students in proof. The insights shared will have broad implications for enhancing the teaching and learning of proof.

Further information: Submission to JMM involves only an abstract and title, and there is no point at which you would submit a paper to JMM or our session leaders. We are looking for evidence in your abstract that the presentation will be about research on undergraduate teaching and learning, rather than the more general category of talks about teaching and learning. One could read a paper out loud as a presentation, but the norm at this conference is more extemporaneous speaking. The audience will be a mixture of mathematics education researchers and theoretical/applied mathematicians who care broadly about teaching and learning.

Feel free to share this announcement email.

Sincerely,

Kaitlyn Serbin
