Please share this information with graduate students who are completing a master’s degree and are interested in pursuing a PhD in mathematics education housed within a mathematics department. We especially encourage middle and secondary mathematics teachers to consider this program.
If you have any questions, please contact us at
math...@unco.eduAbout the Program
The PhD in Mathematics Education program is designed for graduate students interested in mathematics teaching and learning in grades 6–14. Our approach to mathematical pedagogy emphasizes that a deep understanding of mathematics is essential for:
- Teaching students mathematics effectively,
- Engaging in mathematics education research, and
- Supporting meaningful reform in mathematics education.
The program integrates three strands—mathematics, mathematics education, and teacher preparation for grades 6–14—and is well suited for:
Individuals with graduate-level mathematics experience who wish to pursue research in mathematics education, become Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) scholars, or prepare future mathematics teachers (grades 6–12).
Secondary mathematics teachers who want to continue their education and transition into leadership roles in K–12 settings or faculty positions in higher education.
Many of our students receive Teaching Assistantships (TAs) to help offset living costs and some fees. We provide a tuition waiver for all TAs during the first four years of the program (i.e., no tuition is paid by the graduate student; however, insurance and other student fees are the responsibility of the student).
Graduates of the program will be equipped to teach mathematics at various levels, conduct research, contribute to efforts to improve mathematics education for all students, and serve as leaders in mathematics education. Application Information
Application Deadline: February 15, 2026 (all official transcripts must arrive before this date)- Applicants should hold a master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or a related field, with at least 18 semester hours of graduate-level mathematics courses, preferably including analysis and abstract algebra.
- No GRE required.
- Teaching/Research Assistantships are automatically considered for all admitted students who maintain satisfactory progress.
- Application fee: Waived for current or former UNC students. Other applicants may request a fee waiver.
