Dear all,

The Novembertagung on the History and Philosophy of Mathematics is an international conference aimed at PhD students and early-career researchers in the history and philosophy of mathematics, as well as related fields. The 35th edition of the Novembertagung will take place at the Université de Lorraine in Nancy (France) from 17–19 November 2025. This year’s theme is: Mathematics and Communities.

The development of the social history of mathematics in the last decades has shown that the image of the mathematician doing solitary and abstract work in his/her ivory tower is a myth. Since then, research has focused on the networks and interactions between scientists, leading to the definition of mathematical communities. The concept of a community within the philosophy of mathematics has taken on many forms, from mathematical communities themselves, to communities that interact with mathematicians or are deeply involved in mathematical research. The 35th Novembertagung will explore the constitution, functioning, and interdependencies of such communities.

This year’s discussions will focus on topics including:

  • Defining and forming mathematical communities

  • Internal dynamics and interactions

  • Institutions and social configurations

  • Epistemic values and shared practices

  • Hierarchies, identities, and marginalized communities

  • Historiographical and philosophical approaches

We are pleased to announce two keynote lectures by:

  • Christophe Eckes (Archives Henri Poincaré, Université de Lorraine)

  • Jingyi Wu (London School of Economics)

The conference schedule is now available on our website: https://novembertagung.wordpress.com/

For any questions regarding attendance, please contact us at novembert...@gmail.com

Please feel free to share this announcement with colleagues and peers.

Best regards,
The Organising Committee
