About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow (code 1352) in mathematical cognition at the Department of Teacher Education, NTNU—The Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The appointment is for three years with up to 6 months of career-promoting tasks including pedagogical training and teaching at the Department.

Project start is planned for February 1, 2026 or as soon as possible.

The postdoc will be part of the research group for mathematical cognition: https://www.ntnu.edu/ilu/mathematical-cognition-and-literacy. The group collaborates with national and international experts in mathematical cognition, mathematics education, linguistics, and machine learning.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Section mathematics.

About the project

How do people link abstract numbers to concrete quantities in the real world?

This postdoctoral position is part of an ongoing project exploring how people estimate quantities. The project combines theoretical modeling with behavioral experiments to advance our understanding of the cognitive processes that connect our sense of magnitude with mathematical thinking, and their role in the development of numerical competence. The postdoc will investigate the role of cognitive heuristics and visual memory in numerical judgments, with a focus on disentangling the relative contributions of domain-general versus number-specific processes.

Potential applicants are encouraged to contact us in advance for more information about the position and research project.
