Hi,

I am Devanshi Pingolia, a student who has cleared jee this year. Actually I have a lot of queries regarding "applied mathematics" at iit roorkee, which is why I have decided to write this email to you. I was always clear that I am going to opt for a branch which is of my interest and maths is one of the subjects that interest me. It's not like I am very very passionate about maths and I love to solve problems but yeah, I like it to a considerable extent. I understand it and I am also able to solve questions but I have no sort of very deep inclination for it. Honestly, I don't have it for any engineering branch but yeah, c.s. interests me. I am going to be very honest with you because then only you could give me a valuable suggestion. Engineering is not my passion, something else is, but let's say that my passion is not a very practical decision (society problems) and I want to do engineering because I want a degree in it. So, in my college I don't want to devote my entire time to academics as I have bigger plans for something else. I hope you understand this. It is because of that I want to really know: what the toughness level of this branch is like ? Will I be able to manage it by studying not too much? How much do I have to indulge in projects and all?

And secondly, I don't want to go in research or teaching. I want a job after 5 years or may be after a PhD in anything (if I think of that later). So, if I don't study anything else other than this branch's course, will I get placed ? 

Lastly, I would also like to mention that I am also getting chemical engineering or chemical science and technology and I have been equally interested in chemistry too. But I am not thinking much about them. I am genuinely interested in this branch (although I don't have complete knowledge).

Anyway, it would be a great help to me if you answer my questions and give your suggestion. I am eagerly waiting for your reply.

Hi Devanshi,

Congratulations for your result, and good to know you want to do something for the society.

To answer your queries, since it is a Master's programme you will have to work for your thesis in final year. Otherwise if you pay attention in classes, the courses are quite manageable, apart from a few which might require some extra effort.

You will have plenty of options to do other things. NSS chapter of IIT Roorkee is quite active.

However having said that, I strongly feel that if your ultimate interest is working in social sector, this might be a very long and indirect way. You can look at popular courses like in TISS(Tata Institute of Social Sciences) or Jindal School of Public Policy. Economics Honours from a good college is  also a good option, both for job and for understanding socio-economic landscape of India. I know of people who have gone on to work in developmental consultancy after the usual eco honours course in SRCC and are working with state governments on various projects.

Also social and development sector is coming up in a good way in India. A lot of developmental consultancies are present in Delhi and Mumbai by IIMs and Harvard alumni, of course the packages may not be comparable to  traditional jobs , but are decent.

But, one reason why you can pursue maths to your advantage for working in social sector is, through maths you can try to specialise in data analytics which has become inevitable for every private organisation, and few years down the line, most of the NGOs and development organizations will be using it to arrive at better decisions. So in this way you will have a core competency apart from your leadership/soft skills through which you can go ahead and make your contribution.

I am a little busy right now, so thats all I can advise as of now, but I will suggest make an informed decision.

  I am Harshit Rao a 17 year old who had just cleared jee advanced 2017 with a rank of 2926 . Although I had very much interest in mathematics but initially i wanted to take Mathematic & computing which is not possible owing to my rank. Therefore i request you to clear my doubts:
1) the difference between mathematics & computing and applied mathematics

2) which are some major companies which hire students

3) what are the chances of one going abroad for higher studies after this

4) will the M.Sc degree have an effect due to non -availability of any B.Tech degree

Dear Harshit,

Congrats for clearing JEE! I am not sure if you have taken Applied Maths yet or you are still considering other options. I was in a similar situation as you exctly 10 years back. I had either the option to choose applied mathematics at IIT or computer science at DCE. I am glad I came to IIT Roorkee and it's been one of the best decisions I have ever taken in my life. I'll try to answer some of your queries here:

1. Not much. Although you will not be trained in computer science, you will get a good enough exposure and all the opprtunities to go deep into the field and build a strong career in computer science. Out of the 11 students of the first batch (I'm from the first batch), 10 are right now into computer science jobs or into higher research. I'm the only one who has gone into business roles, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to do that if you like.

2. The very top companies that come to IIT recruit from our branch. In fact, after computer science and related branches, Applied Math students get thr top companies. In past, companies like Google, Facebook, microsoft, Ebay and all the top tech companies recruited from our branch. Same goes for top finance companies like Goldman Sachs. Many start-ups recruit from Applied Maths for product management roles. In fact, we are a preferred branch for many analytics companies. So don't even worry about placements. You'll get better placements than most engineering branches.

3. Lot of opportunities to go abroad. One of my batchmates went for her PhD after graduation. Lot of my juniors went to study in top 10 US universities. I am myself applying to some top MBA and professional programs and recently got an admit from MIT. It's totally upto you what you make out of your IIT experience.

4. Absolutely not. I remember I was so worried about this degree not being a B.Tech. But once you land in IIT, this will not even matter. You are treated like any regular undergrad and all the opportunities are open to you. I was part of some of the best clubs at campus and was Secretary of Entrepreneurship Club. After IIT, no one will care what branch you had. The IIT brand name will help you and open many doors for you.

5 years after IIT, and 10 years after being in same situation as you are, I can confidently say that no other degree can open as many doors for you as Maths can. It'll really differentiate you. You can build a career in comptuer science, analytics, finance or even business. I didn't realize the importance of this degree when I was at your place. Not even many years after that. Yes, the Maths department at IIT Roorkee is very strict and not all professors are great, but if I was at your place, I would take Applied Maths in a heartbeat. You will have the best 5 years if your life in an amazing place like IIT Roorkee. Sure it has its flaws, but the people around you will be amazing and you'll make lifelong memories.

Btw, I have heard that they are planning to rename the branch as 'Mathematics and Computing', but don't know how long it will take. Better that you talk to some current students about it. But trust me, it makes no difference.

It really depends on your preferences. IIT Kanpur is great, has a rigorous curriculum and will have slightly more opportunities if you planning to go in consulting. If you are interested in aerospace engineering or have similar inclinations, you should go there. You will also get placement opportunities with companies like Mckinsey, BCG that doesn't recruit from IIT Roorkee yet. In terms of overall experience and extra-curricular activities, I don't think there will be any major difference. 

But in case you are more inclined towards computer science, analytics or finance as a career option, I guess Applied Maths would make much more sense. Be prepared to study some very rigorous maths though. 

Ideally, you should reach out to some current students and alumni from the aerospace engineering program and discuss the curriculum and opportunities after graduation.

How does integrated MSC at iitr affect job after collage in comparison of b.teck or M.teck ?

My daughter choose applied mathematics and computation by choice, I m a doctor I don't know much about the subject. Can anyone guide me about future in this particular field?how hard study requires this branch?someone told me only 50% placements from Rurki iit
