In the Srimad-Bhagavatam there are also many beautiful gitas, or songs, sung by various illustrious personalities that inspire and enlighten us with various levels of spiritual knowledge. The following is a brief summary of the popular gitas found in the Bhagavatam, along with the context in which they appear.

The Pracetas, upon being instructed by their father, King Pracinabarhi, set out to perform devotional austerities to please Lord Krishna before taking charge of the kingdom. Knowing this, Lord Shiva arrived before them to guide them in the devotional service of Krishna and thus taught them the song now known as the Rudra-gita.

During the full-moon night of autumn (sharat-purnima), Lord Krishna played His flute and attracted the minds of the Vraja gopis. Leaving aside their household chores, relatives, and so on, the gopis immediately rushed into the forest to meet Krishna. However, upon their reaching Krishna, He gave them several reasons why they should return home, although deep within His heart He wanted them to stay. Blinded by their attachment to Him, the gopis heard only His external words and became heartbroken. They fervently requested Him to accept them as His maidservants. (Some scholars call this appeal of the gopis the Pranaya-gita, or the song of love.) Hearing their plea, the self-satisfied Krishna reciprocated with them by initiating the rasa dance.

Induced by the lila-shakti (pastime potency) of the Lord, the gopis felt proud for having received such special attention from Krishna. Noticing this, Krishna disappeared immediately. The gopis, maddened by separation from Krishna, searched for Him all over the forest. They enacted His various pastimes and sang their song of separation, called the Gopi-gita.

Many of the songs that are available in this opera have been published as part of the Krshna ganam publications over 3 volumes along with notations. But scores of songs are yet to be published. The opera seems to start with the song, Terodum veedhiyile in Nattai, which describes the wedding of Devaki and Vasudeva and continues upto the Krshna-Rukmani wedding, from the songs discovered till now. There are also a series of songs on the Radha-Krshna wedding.

Apart from the garland of songs in the opera, he has also composed an abridged version of the entire Bhagavatam in one single song, Shree Govinda naama sankeertanam (Ragamalika). This piece starts from Krshna's birth and covers the best highlights of the entire story. Interestingly the composer has included his signature in this piece.

Given below is a list of published and unpublished collection of songs belonging to the Bhagavatam opera. The ragam and talam information for some of the songs are not available and are being researched.

SB 11.23.41: Even while being insulted by these low-class men who were trying to effect his downfall, he remained steady in his spiritual duties. Fixing his resolution in the mode of goodness, he began to chant the following song.

SB 11.23.58: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Thus becoming detached upon the loss of his property, this sage gave up his moroseness. He left home, taking sannyāsa, and began to travel about the earth. Even when insulted by foolish rascals he remained unswerved from his duty and chanted this song.

SB 11.23.61: Anyone who listens to or recites to others this song of the sannyāsī, which presents scientific knowledge of the Absolute, and who thus meditates upon it with full attention, will never again be overwhelmed by the dualities of material happiness and distress.

For devotees pursuing Vraja bhakti in the amorous mood of the gopis, the Srimad Bhagavatam contains six priceless jewels known as the six Gitas or songs of the Vraja-gopis. Bhagavatam is the cream of the Vedas, and the Gopi-gitas are the burfee of the Bhagavatam.

Moreover, since the Vraja-gopis are the topmost devotees of Bhagavan Sri Krishna in all of creation, any devotee who daily hears, reads, or cries these songs will surely increase his/her attraction, love and attachment for Sri Krishna, our Sweet Loving Master.

We feel extremely privileged to present the fully revised second edition of the Venu-Gita, translated from the Hindi commentary written by our beloved Gurudeva om visnupada paramahamsa parivrajakacarya astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Maharaja. The first English edition, which appeared in 1995, was a compilation of the direct transcriptions of a series of lectures which our exalted Gurudeva had spoken in English several years before. The Hindi rendition, inspired by the English version, is the result of his deeply studying the commentaries of Srila Jiva Gosvami and Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura. He was so pleased with the Hindi rendition that he ordered it to be translated into English and published as soon as possible. The new English version flows much more smoothly than the original and convincingly captures the very charming sentiments stimulated in the hearts of the vraja-ramanis when they hear the sweetly alluring song of Sri Syamasundara's flute.

Prefoce We feel extremely privileged to present a revised third edition of the Venu-gita, translated from the Hindi commentary written by our beloved Gurudeva om Visnupada paramahamsa parivrajakacarya astottara-sata Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. The first English edition, which appeared in 1995, was a compilation of the direct transcripts of a series of lectures that our exalted Gurudeva had spoken in English several years before. The second English version, published in September, 1999, flowed much more smoothly than the original and convincingly captured the very charming sentiments stimulated in the hearts of the cowherd damsels of Vraja when they hear the sweetly alluring song of Sri Syamasundara's flute. And now the third edition attempts to refine the language and open up the meanings of the many Sanskrit terms that define the bhakti experience. This book is a beautiful and priceless gift from our venerable Gurudeva to the practicing devotee who is aspiring to do raganuga-bhajana, service in the mood of spontaneous love. Presenting many delightful descriptions of the moods of the gopis who speak the Venu-gita, this sacred text effectively reveals the innocence in the hearts of the Vraja milkmaids, who know only their supernal sweetheart, Vrajendra-nandana Syamasundara. The vision of this innocence, purity and fervent devotion will surely have a powerful effect on the reader, increasing his faith and instilling in him the desire to seriously cultivate bhakti in the wake of Krsna's beloveds. The introduction is also significant with its presentation of many authentic proofs that establish the qualification to hear these confidential topics. The conclusion of all these references is that it is actually our duty to hear these discussions from bona fide Vaisnavas in our disciplic line, even while we are still plagued with extraneous desires. Indeed, our acaryas have informed us that hearing about Krsna's pastimes with the beautiful damsels of Vraja is the apt medicine for healing the blemished heart. This translation is the fruit of a large cooperative effort. All of us from Srila Gurudeva's flourishing garden who helped bring this book to press are grateful to have been engaged in this elevated and exhilarating service. Please excuse any mistake that may have slipped by us. We humbly pray at the lotus feet of our beloved and magnanimous Gurudeva, whom Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu has sent to sprinkle the whole world with sva-bhakti sriyam (intimate service to Sri Radha), that he will be pleased with this English presentation of his Hindi words. We entreat that very soon he will also fill our hearts, which are harder and drier than any piece of bamboo, with his same deep loving sentiments for the Divine Couple, Sri Sri Radha-Krsna Yugala.
