URGENT MESSAGE FOR PISD PARENTS OF MATH ROCKS 5^TH GRADERS

Please e-mail us immediately if:

·         you are a parent of a PISD fifth-grader in Math Rocks;

·         you were notified this week about having to transfer to a Middle School that does not direct your son or daughter to your preferred high school and senior high school; and 

·         you are unhappy about this decision.

 

URGENT MESSAGE FOR MATHEWS ELEMENTARY AND ALL PISD PARENTS OF MATH ROCKS 3^RD & 4^TH GRADERS

Please e-mail us immediately if:

·         you are a parent of a Mathews Elementary or PISD third- or fourth-grader in Math Rocks;

·         you are concerned about the future of Math Rocks.

 

Mathews Elementary Math Rocks parents plan to attend the March 1st PISD School Board meeting to communicate their concerns that the Math Rocks program deviates from the commitments made by the school feeder alignment plan adopted last year.  We would appreciate you support to help convince PISD to make changes before our students drop out of this wonderful program.

Hi Jean,

Thank you for your question.  Contrary to the school realignment decision last year, our Math Rocks students, who want to continue in the Math Rocks program, are being routed to Wilson Middle School.  We Mathews parents who have fifth grade Math Rocks students are trying to get the PISD to change the location to Schimelpfenig, the middle school designated last year as our feeder middle school.

Hi Angela,

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, we fifth grade parents received a four-page packet – letter and transfer forms –on Tuesday, February 16.  The letter states that the only middle school location for the Mathews Math Rocks students will be Wilson M.S.  Needless to say, we were shocked to learn of this change in school location, and we are coordinating an effort to overturn that decision and make Schimelpfenig the Math Rocks middle school for our kids.

If PISD stays with Wilson M.S., there is a strong probability many, or all, of the Mathews Math Rocks students may drop out of the Math Rocks program altogether.  That would be such a shame.  My son David loves Math Rocks!

Great job communicating to all Math Rocks parents. Since what happens this year will affect all math rocks parents and to make life easy for everyone, it would be a good idea to add them to the group if they want. We need them to send emails to the board members too.   I talked to quite a few people today and will write a detailed email at night. But for now I don't see any problem adding all Matthews math rock parents.

Hi all,
 
I looked at the forms and letter they sent us and discovered something that I had missed. If our kids go to Wilson, they would have taken a transfer from their home campus which means they will have to sit out from all UIL competition for one year in high school. This was major concern for all Robinson kids in Jasper who took transfer to Plano Senior. That was the reason Jasper didn't like the split. On one of the handout among forms, the first paragraph cautions us to look at the rules and regulation for UIL (University Interscholastic League). So this is one more point of arguement we can make against transfer to Wilson. This was the arguement made by Jasper about the split.
 
I did talk to Dr. Titu on phone but he couldn't provide much help.
Talked to Julia Huan and she couldn't provide costs for Math Rocks program but said the Ms. Modisette is the one who will know. When I asked her who made the decision, she mentioned it was Ms. Modisette and Dr. Jim W but then she suggested to ask Ms. Modisette about that question to confirm. Most likely this decision has not been made by the Board but at a lower level such as Math Coordinator. So we definitely need to write to and involve the board.
I found out that Brinker has only 2 Math rocks students and the teacher didn't know what the parents were going to do in 6th grade. I am thinking Christie and Huan may not have that many either. In Christie there are kids who have transfered from other areas so not necessarily in home campus. Christie is the perhaps the only school that is equidistant from SMS and Wilson but then we don't where the math rocks students in Christie are from. Brinker is on Tollway and west Parker, Betty Huan is on Quincy and Ohio further out from Mathews.
 
Mathew has the most students in Math Rocks without doubt and there is absolutely no reason to not have Math Rocks in SMS. It is central to Brinker, Huan, Mathews and Christie. 
 
Amy is going to find out about the availability of room for Math Rocks in SMS so we cover that basis too.

I went to SMS this morning to meet with the principal Ms. Olga Sanchez  and 6th grade (2011-2012) counselor and lead counselor Ms. Kelli Tisdale.  I was told that both of them were busy with meetings so I left VM for Ms. Tisdale to call back.  She called back a few minutes ago.  From talking to her the issue with Math Rocks location is completely new to her.  I expressed as Mathews Math Rocks 5th grade parents we all want our students to join SMS and continue with Math Rocks, and we believe our students (around 20 in total) can make very positive contribution to SMS academically - not just math, but overall (PACE/science etc.).  Ms. Tisdale acknowledged that and informed that the room availability information has to come from the principal.

 

Since the principle Ms. Sanchez is now out of the office until Mar.1, I got connected to the voice mailbox of the vice principal and left a VM with Dr. Brant Perry.  I'm still waiting for his callback.  I might go to SMS again tomorrow to meet face to face.  Let me know if any of you want to go together.

I wanted your opinion on when should we send the joint letter? Before or after the meeting on March 1 st? I haven't heard anything from PISD yet regarding my questions. I was thinking individual emails to board members should go prior to march 1 st. That way they are aware of the dissent. What do you all think?
Hopefully Amy has some good news from SMS meaning SMS is willing to support us and wants our kids. SMS stands to lose too if all top performers are transferred to Wilson.

I agree the board should hear about our concerns before the meeting on March 1st or 2nd. 

One thing i want to mention is that the emails will make a better impact if they are addressed and sent to each board member individually  or in worst case copy the email adresses in the BCC field so it won't appear as mass email.

I have another suggestion,  let me know what you all think.  We can get the kids to write a short note on why they like math rocks and why they like to go to SMS - compile them and send it to the board and others, to get them to understand the kids perspective as well.  Pls let me know.

So let us set a date for joint letter. Any idea on how do we go about handling the logistics of getting everyone's signature and delivery?. I will try to get a first draft out to everyone tomorrow evening via email. Whoever is a good writer can edit it to make it look good and effective.

Once we compile the letter and ready to go we can send it through one of our Math Rock kids to school and have all kids read

and sign it in the class. I think all the Math Rock kids meet everyday at school.

 

We can send it through Swetha or if anyone else wants to do it that is fine too.

First is the parents joint letter. Yes,  we can send it through kids and get it signed by parents and kids return it to Sonali or a designated person through a kid representative.

 For the kids letter(if it is agreeable)  let the kids write or type/sign  it at home and return it to the organizer(who will send it to the board - i can take care of this)  through kid representative.

For the kids letter here is an rough outline IMO of what should be in it. Once again, please feel free to change/comment

- About 100 words or less

- Include kids name and grade

- Why you like Math Rock

- How Math Rock is helping you

- Why you like to go to SMS as opposed to Wilson

- Sign and date it

I don't think the joint parents' letter can be sent with kids. We can write all parents' names at the bottom endorsing the content, but how do we send it to the board? That is my question. They don't have an office or anything like that.
