Howdy Folks,

I wanted to let you know that I just uploaded a dev Release of
Math::GSL to CPAN (0.13_02),
it is being shoveled onto dump trucks and being sent down multifarious
tubes to get to a
CPAN mirror near you. This will turn into 0.14 sometime next week if
none of you can make
it break too badly. Enjoy!

Changes since 0.12:

- Chebyshev Series Approximation, with tests and docs
- Improved Deriv, Integration, Chebyshev, Combination and Roots docs
- Improved introduction examples in Math::GSL
- Improved Minimization subsystem tests, but it is not functional
- Added example/deriv/basic

This shows the simple fact that d/dx(sin(x)) = cos(x)

- Added example/sf/erfc_check (thanks to Keith Lofstrom)

Script which tests the erfc() special function against computing
the integral definition with gsl_integration_qagiu()

- Added example/vector/speed

This shows a considerable performance boost using Math::GSL::Vectors
instead of List::Util when searching for the min and max elements of
large sets of random numbers.

- Fixed return signature of gsl_deriv_* functions to return a flat list
- Fix location of shared objects (Sisyphus)
- Added raw() method to RNG objects

When built using perl-5.10.0, during './Build test', every test produces the
warning:

Name "swig_runtime_data::type_pointer3" used only once: possible typo at
C:/perl510_M/5.10.0/lib/DynaLoader.pm line 225.

This, of course, is not a breakage .... just a little hurtful to the eyes
:-)

With perl-5.8, there's no such problem. I think (without having tested) that
if the '.c' files in the cpan distro were built using swig with
*perl-5.10.0*, then this minor annoyance would go away.

Apart from that, it looks excellent !!

There are still failures in BLAS.t, Eigen.t, SF.t, and Statistics.t with my
"-Duselongdouble" linux builds of 5.8.8 and 5.10.0.

For example, there's only one failure in BLAS.t, namely:

is(gsl_blas_dznrm2($vec), sqrt(7));

The lhs is evaluated as 2.64575131106459072, whereas the rhs is
2.64575131106459059.

I would think that the lhs is being calculated by the gsl library using
doubles, whereas the rhs is being calculated by perl using long doubles.
It's therefore not surprising that when the gsl-calculated value is
translated to a long double, it is slightly different to the value that perl
arrived at.

A solution is to replace that test with:

is(within_limits(gsl_blas_dznrm2($vec) - sqrt(7)), 1);

where within_limits() looks like something like:

sub within_limits {
if($_[0] < 0.0000000000001 && $_[0] > -0.0000000000001) {return 1}
return 0;
}

In Eigen.t, 2 of the GSL EIGEN HERM, 2 of the GSL EIGEN HERMV and 6 of the
GSL EIGEN SYMMV tests fail for the same reason.

In SF.t, 5 tests fail - I haven't tracked them down just yet.

In Statistics.t, the failures are GSL STATS ABSDEV, GSL STATS SD, GSL STATS
SKEW and GSL STATS VARIANCE.

I could probably provide patches (for the BLAS.t and Eigen.t failures at
least), assuming that you're happy with my proposed solution. However, I
don't want to go to the trouble of creating patches if they're not going to
be used :-)

Thanks for catching that improperly written test, it should be using
is_similar(), exported by
Math::GSL::Test (which doesn't have POD yet...). Coming Real Soon Now.

If you could just send the entire output of

./Build test --verbose 1

as a text attachment to the list that should be sufficient for me to
find the failing tests. I suspect that
most of them are is() vs is_similar() but a few may be more interesting ...

Feel free to submit patches that use the testing functions from
Math::GSL::Test, they really
make life a lot easier :)

Yes - I now remember having come across is_similar() before. (Clean forgot
all about it :-)

Thanks for the good debugging info!

The BLAS, Eigen and Statistics tests are now fixed in master+bleed.

The Special Functions tests require closer examination...

PS: Remember, if you want to see the latest changes you can check out the latest source with git:

           git clone http://leto.net/code/Math-GSL.git
           cd Math-GSL
           git checkout -b bleed   # create new local branch
           git pull origin bleed   # pull in remote bleed

Then you use "git pull origin" to update it and "git checkout master/git checkout bleed" to switch between branches.

Yep - all looks good apart from the SF tests. Attached is a file containing
the output of './Build test' appended with the output of 'perl -Mblib
t/SF.t' as run on my i686-linux-64int-ld build of perl 5.10.0, using
tonight's git version of Math-GSL.

I'll try to have a play with those failing SF tests early next week (if they
haven't already been solved by then).
