Dear Group Members,

Related to : Radiography Examination

Can we add the value of geometric unsharpness to the discountinuity size acceptability value for accepting a discontinuity.

Governing codes:
ASME BPVC Sec V & ASME B 31.3

Example.

Say Up to 2mm porosity is acceptable as per the code.

We have established the geometric unsharpness value by procedure qualification of the technique and observed as 0.2

My question is, can we accept a porosity of 2.4mm by adding (0.2x 2times Ug for both the sides of the discountiuity) the geometric unsharpness to the acceptability value of 2mm.

Please advise with code references or code interpretations.

Regards,

Answer is  NO
To minimise the unsharpness code given acceptable value.

Dear Sir,

"Answer is  NO "

Code reference please.

"To minimise the unsharpness code given acceptable value. "

That is what I mentioned that the Ug as established by procedure qualification....

I request an open discussion and logical approach on this topic...

Please give the code reference/clause.

There is no specific reference. The Ug is a criterion for accepting RTs and not for accepting of defects. This is self explanatory and thus there is no need for specific Code paragraph

Dear sir,

I agree with you.

Please go through the below condition.
Ug is 0. 2mm

Suppose the actual defect size is 2mm. Then in the radiography films it will show as 2.4mm.

If the upperlimit for that defect as per governing code is 2mm,  will you accept this defect or not?

If the Ug is less, the same defect can be accepted and if Ug is more, the same defect will get rejected.
