16 MN Steel ??

One Seagoing vessel has a repair to be carried out on a pipe.
The flange of the pipe is welded and the flange is broken in parts.
The only sketchy information available is the material of the flange is supposed
to be "16 MN (or 16 mn ??) steel". The vessel is in a remote port and material testing lab
is not available in the port. Can the members throw some light as to what this material
may be and what welding process / consumables may be used??
Consumables can be sent by road or similar transport, and the marine repair yard should be
having standard welding equipment for SMAW and possibly also for MIG/MAG & GTAW.

The medium/ material passing through this pipe is a mixture of sea water and sand/silt as it is dredger.
The Pipe ID = 750 mm; OD = 820 mm

| In Darukhana and other Mumbai steel markets 16MnCr5 is available, has air hardening characteristics for temper. But it may hardly be a flange material. I strongly suggest, you do a PMI for the material type, then a peck at welding can be taken.. Or, judging from the application, it looks like a casting. Please confirm on these aspects and may be some one will have a solution for

Because of the higher manganese and carbon content, a modest preheat is
required. High restraint would dictate a higher preheat. Typically
welded with any carbon steel filler but should be welded with low
hydrogen electrodes if using SMAW (AWS E7015, E7016, E7018). Material
is similar in properties to ASTM-A516 Grade 70.

We thank you for your advice of putting all information together in one place.
We will do that from next time.
In this particular case the company's Rep. was asking us about this problem from Hongkong
and the vessel is in India but not in Mumabi or any big port. The vessel has changed hands several
times and the original pipeline manuals are not available on board. Thus all the problems about
finding out the material and the welding processes, else we would have got the ready info in one place!!
As more info. was received we again put it on the site. This is the reason for putting two mails!
We also understand the need to get to get as clear a picture and as much info. as possible,
but this is what the shipping busines is and all the info. at one time may not be available.
The crew is probably a mixed nationality one with all the communication problems.
We believe it is the main discharge pipe of the Dredger's Pump on board and thus the emergency.
Even we asked many questions but did not get answer even whether the pipeline is cast or fabricated.
But as the flange is welded, we assumed the pipeline is fabricated.
Anyway we feel we have received the info. required, we have conveyed the info. and the job will be done.
