Hello everybody,
Can somebody tell me please whether ASTM A106 Grade B is fully killed
steel by ASTM specification itself. If not then is it also avalable in
the form of Semi-Killed steel.

Dear Mr. Vivek,

According to para. 4.1 of ASTM A 106, it seems that it should be fully Killed but I think Experts and Manufacturer can help.

4. Process
4.1 The steel shall be killed steel, with the primary melting
process being open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric-furnace,
possibly combined with separate degassing or refining. If
secondary melting, using electroslag remelting or vacuum-arc
remelting is subsequently employed, the heat shall be defined
as all of the ingots remelted from a single primary heat.

Kind Regards,
Zarei

Hi,
Yes It shall be Killed steel. But there is an option given in the CODE specificationed as below.
4.3 For pipe NPS 112 [DN 40] and under, it shall be
permissible to furnish hot finished or cold drawn.
4.4
Unless otherwise specified, pipe NPS 2 [DN 50]
and over shall be furnished hot finished. When agreed
upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser, it is
permissible to furnish cold-drawn pipe.
Also find the attached file might be useful to you.

Thanks & Regards,

(Karthik)

Dear Vivek

Code says only killed steel , i.e manufacture will furnish the same in semi killed also. If you required Fully killed material then you have to carry out O2 analysis.

Hi,
Steel mill manufacturing process and product making process are two different issues, whether hot finished or cold drawn, the original steel stock SHALL be fully killed

The mfg TC must show fully killed to comformed the requirement.

There are also mfg TC available in market, in which Fully killed / killed is not mentioned, these kind of TCs should not be allowed to use if the requirement is Fully killed.

Dear All,
I have a query here.In the certification requirements, both in A106 B and A 530 / A 530M, the fully killed statement is not a requirement. If so, Can't we accept a certificate to be deemed as killed, on seeing the certification statement which says the material conforms with the A106 B specification?
Thanks and Regards,
K.Rajagopal
