Can anybody has experience with performance of RT on tube to tubesheet welds, please share details for both techniques (i.e. back radiation and forward radiation), equipment literature if any for this type RT.

Dear Mr. Raghuram,

I have never heard or seen RT of TTS [Tube to Tubesheet joints]. TTS welds
are normally checked by Penetrant testing, Pneumatic testing and complete
penetration [during mock up tests].

I too would like to know if RT of TTS is carried out and how its done.

Thanks and regards,

Jignesh

In ceratin conditions Tube are attached to tube sheet by Butt weld configuration. (Eg when coke formation is anticipated, thermal gradient requirements demand  etc.)
In such cases TTP joint is examined by UT. The  butt weld is a radiographable theoretically  but in practice RT is not feasible due to presence of  cluster of  joints. UT is the NDE demaded for such joints. Internal bore welding machines are used for such welds.

Friends,

Helium leak test may be carried out to ensure the quality of TTS weld joints after PT.

We have done extensive RT of such joints in the past.
We have adopted the back radiation technique in which the source shall be moving from the front side of the joint. We have used the roli camera without guide tube and only the cranking unit wire coupled with source pigtail shall be used. The film used was of AGFA D4 with a special type of cassette with a hole at the centre.Vide this hole on the film cassette, the source enters into its position in case of back radiation technique.
It is preferred to use low curie source of Ir-192 of the order 3 to 4Ci.
Refer the attached word file for the source and film setup.

Instead of Gamma rays, you may use micro-focus X ray machine with hooded anode target which was developed by Sasol.
