Subject: [MW:11108] DUPLEX S.S. (S.S. 2205) TO AUSTENITIC S.S. (Grade 316L)
welding.

Dear Experts,

I come across with very strange welding combination. That is Duplex
stainless steel to ausatenitic steel welding. Here Flange is SS 316 L & pipe
is duplex stainless steel (2205).

plz guide me abt which filler wire I should use? & which good engineering
practises should adopt during welding.

Here is the chart from API which deals with SS mismatches.

Dear Chintu:

Mo is very critical here,
Since 316 or 2205 are being used because of their Mo content (for salt water or pitting corrosion resistance), so you must make sure that your weld has that minimum amount of Mo as in 316 (to match "cheaper" base metal in this joint).

2205: Mo 3%
316 : Mo 2-3%
E309L-Mo : Mo 2.7%

So as Mr.
Ahmed Osman mentioned, you may use E2209 or E309LMo (whichever you choose, Mo content is acceptable)

You have to know how to use De-Long diagram to be able to accurately select a filler metal for such dissimilar welds
.
