DEAR MEMBERS,

I AM SHAILESH WORKING AS A QA/QC INCHARGE CORE TEAM MEMBER ADGAS, DAS ISLAND. WE ARE WORKING HERE FOR THE FORTHCOMING MAJOR SHUTDOWN.

IN ONE OF THE REPAIR & RECOMANDATION I CAME ACROSS AN INTERESTING CASE.

ONE 20" Sch. 10 SYSTEM HAS COME UNDER SECTIONAL REPLACEMENT. MATERIAL IS SA333 GR.6 ERW PIPE. CLIENT IS ASKING FOR HARDNESS MAX. 200 BHN. ALSO THRE IS NO PWHT INVOLVED IN IT.  CLIENT HAS NOT CLARIFIED IF THIS HARDNESS IS AFTER WELDING OR AS RECEIVED MATERIAL. I HAVE REFERED THE ASME SEC. II PART A WHERE SA333 GR.6 DO NOT ASK FOR ANY HARDNESS.

I WANT TO KNOW FROM YOU MEMBERS WHAT IS THE HARDNESS OF SA 333 GR.6 IN AS RECEICED CONDITION. WHAT WOULD BE HARDNESS AFTER WELDING.

REGARDS,

SHAILESH

Hi Shailesh,

This may be special requirement by the Client.
Client may have specify in the piping specification. Also check for any requirement as per NACE MR0175
Also when client specify for hardness, it is always on as welded condition. But get it confirm from client.
Also to control hardness on weld you shall check CE of the material before welding. It shall be less than 0.40% which will offer good weldability.

Even 0.4% CE looks on the higher side.
It will be well below the 200BHN, if CE is less than 0.25%.

I think 0.25% restriction on CE is bit stringent on material manufacturer.
Since my past experience I was able to achieve 248 Hv10 on material with 0.43% CE.
So I presume 0.35% restriction would be sufficient to achieve 200BHN.

OTHER MEMEBERS ARE WELCOME TO GIVE DECISIONS
