Sandesh,
Impact tests measure the energy absorbed in fracturing a metal sample at high velocity and are used to quantify toughness. The crack tip opening displacement test is a fracture mechanics test which can be used to calculate the stress intensity at a sharp crack tip in the tested material as well as critical flaw sizes which will result in unstable fracture. Both tests provide quantitative results, however, the CTOD test requires additional calculations to achieve the desired output (normally a critical stress intensity).

The rate of crack growth depends on quality of micro structue of weld. The crack growth will be slow if it is ductile and fast it is brittle.
