Dear Friends,

Many clients are specifying that  the base materials ( SA516 Gr. 70N) shall be HIC tested. For welding such a plates we are using normal E7018-1 electrodes.

Weld need not to pass HIC testing. Guide me on this subject.

I presume that the applicable standard is MR0175(NACE).E7018-1 is fine but it should have Nickel less than 1%.Sulphur also preferably should be lower that the specified limits. After welding PWHT is recommended so that the final hardness is less than 22HRC especially in HAZ.After taking care of these if the sample is tested as per TM0177/TM0284 then things should be OK.Most important thing is hardness, which should be always less than 22HRC.So instead of SA516GR70 material preferable is SA516GR60 which has less UTS and hence inherent stress values are less and hence less prone to HIC/SSC cracking.

You may see NACE TM0284. It shows sampling of spiral / seam welded pipes [see Figure 3] in which samples for testing do have welds. Same may be used to test a coupon welded with the intended WPS.

Yes, your comment is right. This is a forum where questions should be ask in REQUEST tone ( i.e. some member say LET ME PROVIDE or CAN SOMEONE ADVISE etc. are non-polite when you are looking for reply to help you!!).

Thank you for kind understanding of everyone.  Cheers - Bimal

Please put apporipriate subject line, (not just WPS, querry, help etc..).
also note that during moderation almost 1/3rd of querries were removed/ignored since last one month, just because either it does't contain meaningful subject or a clear message.

if your message is clear and elaborate, you can expect quick replies, ( for e.g many querries doesnt specify what code is beaing used). also request you not to repeat your querries, as it is a pain for moderators.

it will help all of us (both members as well as moderators)

best wishes
