Hello All,

Does Diffusible Hydrogen test is applicable to AWS SFA 5.28 ER110S-G (Solid Wire) welding wire? As per the AWS 5.28 section, test should be done in accordance with AWS A4.3 section.

I have spoken with manufacturer of solid wires and as per their opinion Diffusible Hydrogen test is not applicable to any Solid wire grades.

Can any one clarify?

Regards,

Aditya Gujar

Hi Aditya ,

As per Sec II, Pt-C, SFA 5.28, this test is optional. See the attached extract from SFA 5.28.. Filler metal is of very high tensile category. Hence incorporating diffusible hydrogen values in the CMTR  could be helpful for any issues down the road.

You may discuss this issue with the manufacturer and settle according to project requirements.

Thanks.

The diffusible hydrogen test is “optional” per the specification.

The Annex provides a nice summary A8.2 (see below).  For high strength materials, it may well be prudent to require the diffusible hydrogen test to be performed to assure that the manufacturers product should not be a source for cracking.  Most often cracking issues are the result of improper low hydrogen controls during fabrication welding.  FYI - please note that I have experienced problems with bare wire contaminated with residual drawing compound in the past.  I expended considerable effort trying to find a local issue first before determining (and confirming) it was a wire manufacture issue.

Enjoy. Stay well.
