WPS without consumable insert

Dear Expert

Please advice me about following.

 

If WPS ( GTAW)  is qualified for  without consumable  insert ; can we use it for with insert.

Code used for acceptance:- ASME sec IX

Hi Kisan,

 

As per ASME SEC IX QW 404.22 it is non essential variable. So you can use as it with insert.

Please read below given Clause.

QW-404.22

The omission or addition of consumable

inserts. Qualification in a single-welded butt joint, with or

without consumable inserts, qualifies for fillet welds and

single-welded butt joints with backing or double-welded

butt joints. Consumable inserts that conform to SFA-5.30,

except that the chemical analysis of the insert conforms to

an analysis for any bare wire given in any SFA specification

or AWS Classification, shall be considered as having the

same F-Number as that bare wire as given in table QW-432.

With or without filler metal is one parameter
With or without consumable insert is an other parameter
Those two parameters are not linked together

Dear Kisan

As per QW404.22, addition or deletion of consumable inserts is non-essential variable for Welding Procedure Qualifications. You can use the same WPS.

However for Welding Performance Qualification, as per table Qw-356, addition or deletion of consumable inserts is "essential" variable for manual and semiautomatic GTAW. Thus your welder needs to be requalified with the consumable inserts.
