Good Morning Sir,

Hope things are fine at your end.

Sir I have one query on using flanged forged material  ASTM A182 Gr F316L (B16.5) for weld neck flange at temp (-)70 deg C., however B16.5 doesn’t tabulated any equivalent pressure (Group-2.3 per B16.5)below -29 C. Is this material suitable for temperature -70 degree Centigrade while ASME B16.5 doesn’t provide any allowable at this temperature.

Actually In one of my project PMS having temp range of -75 to 150 Deg C, and tabulated ASTM A182 Gr F316L (B16.5) for flanges. My piping has operating temperature of -70 Deg C and Design 85 Deg C.

I need to check flange leakage but unfortunately no allowable values given in B16.5.

I request your expert views on above.

Dear Mr Bagesh,

I have worked with cryogenic field where MDTM is up to -196 Deg Celcius and flange used for the field of cryogenics we used that same material : ASTM A 182 Gr F 316L.In my opinion there will be  no problem to use this flanges for lower temperature services.

Regards

Yash

Pl read A312 piping standard where it is clearly said that stainless
steel matiarial can be used up to -200 deg C without impact, and also
We are using SA 182 F 304L or 316lL at -190 Deg C in cryogenic
service.

Because of FCC structure of SA182 steel you can use 316L for mentioned forged flange.
