I would like to take NDT on Weld joints of 316 Pipe material Sch 10s. As per the site condition X-ray cant be used. And gamma source is also not available. Is there any other way. I mean Manual Ut or PAUT? Does the minimum thickness will be a problem if i go for Manual UT? please advise

All NDT methods should be done based on a written procedure.

This written procedure should contain any criteria for doing such method and further action after NDT execution. Generally UT is not a common method for thicknesses thinner than 6mm (some standards mentioned 8mm). Please note that UT is not common but may use in few cases.

The thickness is one of the issues you should concern about and the other will be the nature of your material (austenitic structure). Selection of the probe size and frequency will be very important.

Also the type of discontinuities and their position and orientation will be the case.

My answer is a general one and in your case, consult with a NDT expert to write a procedure for your case.

Regards

Dear Dipak
As per my knowledge UT and PAUT is not possible due to austenite grain structure.

Dear Sir,

Do the radiography with selenium (Se-75) radioisotope. You will get the radiography film almost same as X-Ray.

This is a proven procedure for in-Situ radiography.  Engineers India Ltd(EIL), a leading Consultant and PMC firm, follows this procedure for radiography and we have done this successfully when worked for them.
