Dear exparts,
As per ASME B  31.3 what is the minium spacing to be maintened between two butt weld in pipe & where is it mentioned

Is it three times of thickness or 25 m.m  whichever is greater.

5 time of thickness, or 50 mm, whichever is greater.

B31.3 is silent about that..so you need to refer back to project or client specification..some of client specify 2x or 50mm..

THATS ALL CORRECT BUT THINK PRACTICALLY suppose for diameter of pipe
thickness is 10mm and dia meter 1000mm . here if you apply this rule and going
to weld with 50mm distance ? what will happen to the piece? it will twist and
uneven shape and you may not be in a position to weld. do u agree. ok to avoid
this it is better go for at leas one dia length for good engineering practice
and avoid rework.

Question:  In accordance with B31.3, are there
requirements or guidelines on the minimum distance
between welds in a pipe?

Reply:  No, except as provided in paragraph
304.3.3(e).

Dear Sir(@MPK),

 

The copy’s you send mentions requirements for spacing between longitudinal welds, Mr. Pradip is asking for spacing between butt welds in pipe so in my opinion he’s talking about circumferential welds!
