Dear Experts

SS 316L Plate of 2mm welded with ER316L filler wire (1.6mm) using GTAW proceeds with Argon 99.99% for WPS qualification.

After welding we found the following

1.    Centre line crack on root side

2.    Irregular weld profile on root side

Please advice how to medicate these discrepancies.

Regards

Krish

Your picture shows that purging was not given or properly not purged.

Dear Mr.Patel

No Back purging given by Argon. This PQR qualification is to weld a
cabinets for instrumentation items.

dear krish,
1, cetreline crak is clear result of improper cleaning of plates and filler metal and tools.
2.or you can have squire butt joint.
3.if you are using 3G position try with 1G.
4.you can go for stringer bead instead of weaving as shown in pic.
5.you can have vertical upward instead of downward as i show in pic ripples.
6.fine tune your weld parameter with good skillfull welders.

would you ever try autogenous welding for such thin plates.?

regards
mohd.

Hi Krish,

Your weld appears to be heavily oxidized, this normally happens when there is insufficient purge or contaminants.

Main Reasons : Root Gap, Heat Input, Skills of welder, Shielding, Filler wire .

Can i know why are you qualifying WPS with 2mm plate. is it a client requirement, other wise you can go for higer thick ,as WPS will having thickness range.
