| As per AWS D1.1 ,4.21 The welding personnel shall follow a WPS applicable to the qualification test required. All of the WPS essential variable limitations of 4.7 shall apply, in addition to the performance essential variables of 4.22. The Welding Performance Qualification Record (WPQR) shall serve as written verification and shall list all of the applicable essential variables of Table 4.12. Suggested forms are found in Annex N.,welder qualification since the change in position is an essential variable for WPS according to table 4.7 (27).you cannot use the 4G WPS to Qualify Welder for 3G Thanks & Regards, (Karthik) Karthikeyan.S QA/QC Manager Getabec Energy Co.,Ltd. 379,Moo6,Soi8,Nikhomphatana, Rayong-21180, Thailand.

| ASME Sec.IX - Position is not an Essential Variable for WPS. So 4G WPS can use for 3G welder qualification with all other EV for welders are met.(P.No.,F.No., etc.,) |

| Hi, QW-461.9 is for PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION — POSITION AND DIAMETER LIMITATIONS. i.e,If a welder Qualifies with the position specified in the Qualification test column, will be qualified for the columns specified in the right side. Now the question raised by Mr.Srinivas is As per ASME Sec.IX,If a WPS qualified with 4G position can be used for 3G welder Qualification or not? For this answer is yes.he can use that WPS for 3G or any position welder qualifications.(with all other essential variables are met) QW461.9 doesn't restrict for WPS qualification.Change in Position is not an Essential Variable for WPS as Per QW252 to 265. |

Once again, the enquirer has not provided sufficient information to properly reply.
There is one exception in the ASME IX that will not allow use of the WPS. If impact testing is required, then supplementary essential variable, QW-405.2 would apply and the WPS would not be qualified for the vertical position by a PQR welded in the 4G (overhead) position.
Note that QW-301.2 states in part that, “. . . The performance qualification test shall be welded in accordance with qualified Welding Procedure Specifications . . . except . . . preheat or postweld heat treatment . . . may be omitted. . . .” Thus if the WPS states that welding shall be performed in the overhead (4G) position only, then the WPS will have to be amended to at least include welding in the vertical (3G) position.
Also, a minor comment. The G, F,and S designations {QW-461.3 through QW-461.8} are qualification test position designators. The production welding positions qualified to be stated on the WPS are: flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead, all, or special per QW-461.9. These qualified positions are limited per QW-461.1 or QW-461.2. Those with intimate Section IX knowledge are aware of this distinction and only put the G, F, or S designator on the PQR, and not on the WPS. Their WPS will state Flat (F), Horizontal (H), Vertical (V), overhead (O), all or special (S).
