Dear Sir,
I have to do PWHT after explosive bonding and some portion overlay welding in heat exchanger. We have to do overlay and weld cladding of SS 304 on SA 336 Gr. F5. PWHT heating cycle is 720 C at 2 hours.

 Material : SA 336 Gr F5 + SS 304 CLAD

now my doubt is if we will do PWHT in sensitization range so that there is chance of IGC in SS material and SS clading will not fulfill its corrosin resistance purpose.
so kindly pls suggest we can do or not do???

Thanks,
Hemant Suthar

304 clad not suitable for F5. It has to be 321 or 347 clad. vanchi

If you have used 304 clad then it is not adviceable but if u r going with 304L then u can comfortablly do that. Mostly cladding is carried out with Low carbon grades so check that first.

Bec.304 is very sensitive towards temp.range of 400 to 900 degree. As I said earlier there r various phases like sigma, chi phase, 475 embritllement etc.and sensitization occured if material hold in between this temp.ranges for a long...Now the basic funda is that all these phases develop different carbides especially with chromium in many cases and any. Kind of carbides increse the corrosion rate of SS.on the other side In case of 304L, due to already low carbon, chances of carbides development brcomes minimum.so mostly it is convenient to use 304L instead of 304. The another option is to usr stabilized grades like 321 or 347.
