Dear All,

i have a pqr 20" thk 11.91 mm as per api1104 ,for the production weld
we can apply this to 10" pipe of same grade material.

What you want to do is acceptable per API 1104.  More detail is provided below.

API 1104 does not predefine the diameter or wall thickness ranges/limits for welding procedures when they are qualified to the section 5 and 12 requirements which covers all welding processes except welds that will be evaluated to the Appendix A ECA weld acceptance criteria.  It is up to the owner company or contractor to set the wall thickness and diameter ranges.  Many used the suggested limits which are the ones specified for welder qualifications.  API 1104 does consider wall thickness range/group an essential variable; therefore, once the wall thickness range is specified on the WPS, it cannot be changed without qualifying a new procedure.  The diameter range is not an essential variable and therefore it can be changed without qualifying a new procedure.

Only welder qualifications have defined diameter and wall thickness limits for single qualification.  Diameter 2.375" - 12.75"; greater than 12.75". Wall thickness 4.8mm - 19.1mm; greater than 19.1mm.

no, you can’t. please refer to section 5.3.2.3 for the range of outside diameter. you should have PQR with diameter group from 2.375" through 12.750".

Dear Sir,

You may please refer Table 2 of API 1104 and from this table you may find diameter range and wall thickness range. you mentioned only dia and not wall thk. if the wall thk is as 20" dia  or with in 0.5" you may use the same PQR.

Thanking You,

Dear Sir,

Please refer Table 2 , you can come to know the relation of Diameter and wall thickness

Thank u

Dear Muthu Bharathi

Table 2 is only for the specimens requirement for pqr as per dia .its does't say that range of qualification. Iam right?
According to 5.3.2.3 wps need to show only the dia inch as per grouping of 6.2.2
according to 5.4 essential variables does't say that dia is essencial variable only there is mensioned that the wall thickness in 5.4.2.5
as of my interpritation if the thicness with in the group wecan use the procedure for production weld irrespective of size

pls let me know if iam wrong

The range over which the diameter and wall thickness is qualified has always been a confusing issue in API 1104.  In paragraph 5.3.2.3, the key words there are "example of suggested groupings..."  Because they are suggested groupings, they are not mandatory.  Table 2 does not apply to establish the diameter and wall thickness range since the table is specific for identifying the type and number of test specimens for procedure qualification tests based on the diameter and wall thickness used for the procedure qualification.

Dear Bharathi,

Plz check Appendix A3.1 Clause P,which says a change more than -0.25D and +0.5D is an essential variable.

So as per above clause if ur PQR material is 20" Dia,then u cannot use it on 10" pipe.Ur range will be 15" to 30".

Any comments welcome from other friends.

Regards,
MAZ
