Dear Team,

I want to confirm about the PWHT requirement in carbon steel pressure vessel as per ASME section Viii Div.1 UCS-56. Soaking time has been calculated as per vessel wall thickness 29mm but trunion wall thickness is 50mm welded with shell. Can this 50mm thikness be exluded from PWHT soaking time requirement.
1.Is there any interpretation to confirm that PWHT parameters shall be calculated as per shell wall thickness only not for attachment welded with pressure parts?
2. Below para is applicable for PWHT requirement.

Best regards,
M Bilal

by sketch, its joint between 22mm and 50mm ?

so consider thickness 22mm butt weld and beyond above is fillet joint.

Dear Bilal,
No, you cannot simply ignore the 50 mm trunnion when deciding PWHT. ASME VIII-1 (UCS-56 and related notes/interpretations) makes the pressure-retaining part control the PWHT temperature, but the thickness at the weld/attachment and the weld volume (soak band) are explicitly used to determine heating rate and holding/soaking time. In practice you must check UCS-56 and the ASME interpretations and use the greater thickness condition required by the Code rules for the weld/joint when sizing soak time (and ensure the soak band contains the weld and HAZ)

Thanks,
Balamurugan

Please proceed with PWHT considering 50mm butt weld size thickness of Trunion ..

Dear Bilal,
Refer to Sec VIII Div. 1, UW-40 (f)5f, the governing thickness for PWHT calculation for Non pressure # Pressure Part is the thickness of the weld at the point of attachment. Request calculate Soaking time as per the same.
From attached image, it is appearing as a Groove weld across the thickness.

Mohammed

UW-40.6 given how determined PWHT think. Base on that 50mm need to consider for PWHT.

All are request to clear the same within ASME B31.3 case is as mention below.

1. Trunion thk is 28 mm and mother pipe thk is 23 mm.
2. Type of joint fillet joint

PWHT required or not?
