Dear Experts,
What is the method for  selecting electrode / filler metal for welding of two dissimilar metals. at present i need to establish a WPS for IS 2062 to SA 387 Gr.11 Class 2. Which are P1 & P4 materials respectively.

Once again, P1 will gouvern in the selection of the filler metal. the filler metal should be for the lower grade

Dear Dharmadattu,

For selecting a electrode/filler metal for two dissimilar metal you have to choose the Electrode/filler metal of higher grade material.i.e if you want to weld P4 to P1 you have to select electrode of P4 material.

Too much Lack of experience ....

Is always
the material, with higher chemical composition, never the less materials with chemical composition.

Mr. Dharmadattu,

If it is CS with AS  the esigner feels substitution with a lower grade material is acceptable due application point of
view. Then why not an electrode equivalent to that material. If you are particular, you can use  electrode suitable
to P-4
also. But it is not required.

If it is CS with AS, a lower grade consumable (equal to CS - min. E 7018  or  ER 70S-2) is recommended.
Preheating could be done for P11 to an extent of 100 - 150 C if required.

If it is CS with SS,  (equal to SS - E 309 or ER 309L) is recommended to take care of corrosion aspects
due to use of  CS..

If it is SS with AS, (equal to SS - E 309 or ER 309L) is recommended for an  application Temp. of <500 deg C.

If it is SS with AS, (equal to SS - E Cr Ni Fe 3 or ER Cr Ni Fe3) is recommended for an  application Temp.
of >500 deg C. If SS is of 316 type, add Mo to it.

Trust above info. could be  of  help to you.

Sridhar.

u can choose filler metal to match either one of base metal, but
generally on lower side to carbon migration/chromium depletion, ref
ASME B31.1/127.2.1 for further details.
