Dear All

Any body can explain me why we do buttering on weld edges of similar materials before welding .

Hi,
Your question is not correct. any way buttering will be carried when
wide gap more than root gap recommended as per wps then buttering
required. Also when base metal size is less than the requirement size
of plate, then buttering will be carried out to build the plate. PQT
shall be done.

Dear Mehta

Buttering weld is procedure to rectify wide gaps (root openings) greater than those permitted by AWS D11 (normally found in tubular joint in structural connection) and/or client specification, but not greater than 19 mm or twice the thickness of the thinner part, whichever is lesser. Procedure shall be qualified.

Dear Mehta,

There are mainly 2 purposes to carry out buttering:-

(1) To compensate for poor joint preperation (wide root gap), material is added to both faces of joint.

(2) to avoid PWHT , not to sensitize material, for eg:- Stainless steel,

In addition to the two listed, there is one additional case where buttering may be performed.  Buttering may be performed to provide a buffer layer between incompatible materials or to enhance the weldability of a joint between dissimilar materials.  While I am sure there are numerous examples, one instance I have experienced is welding Monel K500 to carbon steel – the Monel K500 was buttered with Monel prior to making the weld to avoid weld metal and HAZ cracking.

Dear Manpreet Singh
Please could you explain item No. (2):  to avoid PWHT , not to sensitize material, for eg:- Stainless steel. If we are made buttering on edge in stainless steel, how it will avoid PWHT?  Please...

Thanks & Best regards

Dear Mehta,

If you want to weld Stainless Steel such as SS316 to P91 material, normally most of the codes would require PWHT (approx. 760 deg) of P91 material, however SS316 would get sensitised at this temperature, to avoid this you can use Nickel weld base metal (ERNiCr-3) on P91 and do PWHT, later use same ERNiCr-3 to weld between P91 and SS316 without any PWHT.

Hope this helps
