Hi,

i have same problem in last project, power piping process .According B31.1, we don't found information,  we get approbation from engineering.

 Hi,

Considering the heat affected zone , It has been fixed as a thumb rule  4times of pipe thickness .

There are no specific code  as for as my knowledge.

With regards

Dear Shankar

The ASME B31 Code does not give us the limit. I suggest you to check the engineering document (drawing). What you’re looking for might be at there. Some peoples call them as miter.

From several projects where I was there, restriction between the edges of the two circumferential welds is judged by the engineering department.  Some of them specify that the distance between the two of circumferential butt welds shall not be less than four times from the pipe thickness or 30 mm, whichever is greater. But other document also specifies 5 times from the pipe thickness.

However, all what you can do is to avoid the HAZ and stress effect. This may be a 1 inch for thin material or more than 4 inches for great wall thickness material.

Dear Shankar,

I agreed with Rahman.

The root cause of subject matter- to keep min.dist between two joints -is to avoid HAZ stress effect. In our previous refinery project we were using Bechtel spect as per that if presser parts than six times of pipe thk. or 50 mm whichever is greater. If there is no presser parts like support then we can keep it 2T or 40mm whichever is greater.

Hope that it is clear..

Thanks,
With Best Regards,

Hi,

As per my View, Distance between two circumferential welding will be equalant to D – diameter.

Many other friends had suggested for less than that also, but if the distance is “D”, then it will be easy for fitup and all, then after any RT is also easy.

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

I think below statement is true.

As a good engineering practice “The minimum distance between two penetration welds (circumferential, weld branch connection) is 4 times of pipe thickness or 100 mm whichever is greater.
