As per UCS-85 of ASME Sec.8 div.1, if vessel is subjected to PWHT then all materials including plate, forgings etc. except for standard flanges(ASME B16.5) simulation heat treatment required for test specimen of all materials as mentioned above. Our client is asking simulation of PWHT on test coupon for all materials is it required please clarify interpretation of UCS-85.

Krishna

Dear experts,
My question is if my vessel is subjected to final PWHT then a
simulation heat treatment(PWHT) as per UCS-85 of sec.VIII Div.1 is
required or not for test coupon of all materials like plate, forgings
etc. So please clarify my above query.

Regards
Krishna

Dear Krishna,

Simulation requirement is not mandatory requirement
Normally if client/process Licensor/PMC specification if call for this requirement then it has to be implemented

I have seen this requirement normally for Refinery Service like FCCU/CDU/VDU,etc

Simulation is done on the coupon taken from  same heat as that of vessel
No: of cycles of simulation:1 for actual heat treatment at shop+ 1 for PWHT after any repair at shop + 1 for site repair + 1 for future=4 cycle of heat treatment
Hence coupon shall undergo 4 cycle of simulation heat treatment

However point to be noted that when job require such simulation requirement then during procurement of plates/forging/pipes this requirement shall be shared with manufacturer. So that they would maintain Carbon & CE in material so has to meet mech properties as per ASME Sec IIA.
