  Interpretation #: BPV IX-18-34
 Record Number: 18-771
Subject Description: SC IX; QW-401.1 and QW-403.6 - Thickness Range Qualified for Impact Testing Standard Designation: BPV Section IX Par/Fig/Table: QW-401.1 and QW-403.6 Edition/ Addenda: 2017

Background:
A welding procedure qualification was performed on a 40 mm thick test coupon in 1G position by GTAW (10 mm) and SMAW (30 mm). Tension and bend tests were performed on the 40 mm plate.

A second welding procedure qualification was performed on a 6 mm plate in 3G position by GTAW and only impact testing was performed. A third welding procedure qualification was performed on a 6 mm plate in 3G position by SMAW and only impact testing was performed. All of the essential variables remained the same except for the coupon thickness.
Question:
May the PQRs listed above, support a WPS (GTAW+SMAW) for material requiring notch toughness with a qualified base material thickness range of 5 mm to 200 mm, GTAW weld metal thickness range 20 mm max. and SMAW weld metal thickness range up to 200 mm max.?

Reply: Yes.

My queries .   Is it in order

Hi experts,

I'm need information about 347H material weldability ( welding process, rod/electrode, temperature control, pwht, impact test?!, ....)
Could you help me with references please.

Thank you very much.

Thanks and Regards,

Base metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now: from 6 mm PQRs - 3 mm to 12 mm.

1. GTAW weld-metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now: GTAW from the 6 mm coupon (practically ≤12 mm

unless the PQR deposited 10+ mm).

2. SMAW weld-metal thickness (impact-qualified) you have now: SMAW from the 6 mm coupon (again, small, not

    anywhere near 200 mm).

3. What you do not have: any impact-tested PQR that can justify base thickness up to 200 mm or GTAW weld metal

20 mm /SMAW weld metal 200 mm for an impact-required WPS. The 40 mm non-impact PQR cannot be used to

    fill that gap.

What you need to do to reach the ranges you want:

To qualify the base thickness up to 200 mm for impact toughness

1. Obtain a PQR with impact testing on a coupon T ≥ 100 mm (As most rules let you qualify up to 2T). If you take

T -100 mm and do impact tests according to the spec, you can qualify up to 200 mm (subject to other code

requirements). Alternatively, follow the exact QW-403.6 limits for your material and code application - but in practice,

you’ll need a much thicker impact PQR coupon than 6 mm.

2. To qualify, GTAW weld-metal 20 mm make sure the GTAW deposit thickness t in the impact PQR is ≥ 10 mm

(so 2t ≥ 20 mm). Run a GTAW impact PQR coupon with sufficient deposited weld metal.

3. To qualify SMAW weld-metal 200 mm; that’s enormous - to get 2t -200 mm, you’d need t -100 mm of deposited weld

metal in the coupon (impractical). 200 mm is typically achieved only by a very large coupon and is not a practical

    weld-metal deposit on a lab coupon.  .
