Good Day Experts

We need to weld a EN 8  40mm flange(not listed in ASME) to a  SA106 Gr B  14’’ schedule 40 pipe. This will form part of a pressure vessel being built generally in accordance with ASME VIII Div 1.

The vessel service conditions in this case is not a factor.

Please advise on the following.

1.       Is a pwht cycle required?

2.       The best selection of SMAW electrode?

Your valuable input will be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Stoltz,

Like you have mentioned that EN 8 is not listed in ASME, I am also not sure whether this material should be used within the scope of ASME VIII Div. 1 or not. And if yes, what is the P-number of this material?
Anyway, EN 8 to my information is mild carbon steel and can be treated like P.No. 1 materials.

Moving on, 40 mm is thickness of flange end? If yes, how are you going to make a joint of 40 mm end to 11.1 mm (14" Sch. 40)

There is restriction in % of Carbon content to be used in Pressure vessels. So EN8 may not be acceptable for pressure parts.

Good Morning,
I hope that docs for this material to be used in pressure vessel (as per ASME sec. VIII div. 1) are approved by designer/ client hence there should not be question for the suitability. Also considering that the vessel is not to be stamped like 'U', etc.

EN8 is carbon steel material and as it is not listed in ASME, it has no P no./ grp. no. In this case you have to qualify a WPS/PQR for EN8 (unassigned material) to A 106 Gr B ( P no. 1, Group No. 1). Welding consumables for this may be used GTAW : ER-70S2, SMAW-E7018/ E-7018-1.

PWHT will depend upon:
1. service requirement
2. thickness of welded parts and HAZ (if PWHT is not mandatory as per pt. 1)

Thanks & Best Regards,

Hi

Please note that EN8 has a typical carbon content of 0.35 - 0.45 %.

As per ASME Sec VIII Div.1 UCS-5, (c) Carbon or low alloy steel having a carbon content of more than 0.35% by heat analysis shall  not be used in
welded construction or be shaped by oxygen cutting (except as provided elsewhere in this Division).

What Mr Prem said is 100% correct, sofar we have done lot of Pressure parts for which we never used EN8 as flange or anyother parts. It is new to us

For welding 40 mm thk. EN8 flange, with SA 106 Gr. B pipe, you can use any
low hydrogen electrode like E 7018.

The preheating is required at 250 to 300 deg. C. Pwht  to be carried out at
640 ± 20 deg. C even if the vessel service conditions in this case is not a factor.
